Tribute

Mary S. Wemhoff

On March 26, 2020, Mary S. Wemhoff passed away from complications due to ovarian cancer.
That’s not how we want you to remember her.

Mary had a smile that lit up a room. She was a storyteller with a keen interest in getting to
know everyone she met, to learn your story and to share her own. Her positive attitude
endured despite years of health trials. Even when it could have been so easy to be angry, sad
and frustrated about her health situation, she remained kind and hopeful. She made such an
impression, her doctors and nurses reached out to express their condolences.

Perhaps Mary’s favorite activity was celebrating the seasons. She could wrap a present like
nobody’s business and wrote clever and humorous ‘clues’ for each package, making it all the
more fun for recipients.

She decorated her home for every major and minor holiday. And while we often gave her grief
for hauling 22 boxes of Christmas decorations down from the attic, and then back up, she
transformed her home into a magical Christmas wonderland. She artfully decorated for
Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and on and on. Mary even
changed the paintings on the walls to reflect the seasons.

She loved cranking out tunes on her player piano and her beloved view of Lake St. Clair. In the
1980s, Mary and a band of merry compatriots fought the city of St. Clair Shores to keep the Lac
Sainte Clair Park waterfront accessible to the public. She took this fight all the way to the
Michigan Supreme Court, holding garage sales to pay for legal expenses.

Mary was stubborn, hardworking, known to pull all-nighters and for her creative financing
abilities. An owner of Roulo’s Plumbing & Heating in Harper Woods, she worked tirelessly to
carry on the multi-generational family business, loving her work family as much as her own.

Mary, 77, was born and raised a Motor City girl, a badge she proudly wore. As a single mom,
she raised two strong, smart, independent children. She’s survived by her daughter Anne Nagro
(Scott) and son Tom Wemhoff (Jamie), and four grandsons (August, Ray, Nolan, Jameson), who
enjoyed packages from Nana no matter their age. Mary also is survived by her brothers Al and
John and sister Rosemary; she is preceded in death by her brother Tom.

A service and celebration to commemorate Mary’s life will be held post-COVID. We’ll share the
details when they become available. In the meantime, please raise a glass to Mary and in her
honor proclaim the Roulo family toast: “Bucko!”

We’re kidding! Anyone who knew Mary should be laughing right now. She had a wonderful
sense of humor.

Our sincerest thank you to everyone who kept her in their thoughts and prayers, especially
these last few years. She drew strength from your love and for that we are eternally grateful.
